8. THE VANISH OF FIVE COINS SIMULTANEOUSLY FROM THE FINGERTIPS

image

Hold the left hand stretched out horizontally, palm upwards, the fingers and thumb wide apart. Place a coin on the tip of each finger and the thumb (Fig. 33); hold them balanced there while you place the right hand palm downwards, fingers and thumb extended so that their tips are on the coins but the palms of the hands remain separated. The coins are thus gripped between the corresponding fingers and thumbs of each hand.

Turn the hands vertically and turn Fig. 33 to the right.

Under cover of several up-and-down movements of the hands in the vertical plane, bring the fingers and thumbs of each hand together so that the coins slide behind one another—that between the third fingers going to the left of the coin between the little fingers, and the other coins going in the same way.

The moment they are in a pile, grip them between the right first and second fingers and carry them to the thumb-fork palm; this move must be made at the bottom of the vertical movement of the hands. At once bring the hands upwards, separate them, and open the fingers. Follow the supposed flight of the coins in the air.

To reproduce the coins, first point to the empty left palm, which faces the spectators, with the right forefinger; bring the tips of the right forefinger and thumb lightly together and turn to the right; point to the empty right palm with the left forefinger.

Turn again to the right, bending the right forefinger as before to hide the coins; bend the tip of the middle finger under the pile and draw out the bottom coin a little, pinch it with the tip of the forefinger, and extend the two fingers; place the tip of the thumb under the coin and press it upwards; release the second finger and display the coin above the tips of the thumb—and first finger, keeping as much of it in view as possible (Fig. 34).

Take the coin with the left hand, and produce the second in the same way. Continue the production until all the coins are in the left hand. After the production of each coin and before it is transferred to the left hand, you can turn the palm of the right hand toward the spectators and show that it is empty.

Some performers prefer to reproduce the coins by placing the hands together and sliding the coins back to their original positions between the tips of the respective fingers and thumbs. The necessary action is the exact reverse of that for the vanish. It requires considerable practice.
