7. THE FIVE COINS
A routine of manipulations suitable for performance with the coins collected in the Miser’s Dream (see page 51).
Stand with your left side to the front and display five coins in the left hand at the tips of the left thumb and fingers. Show the right, hand back and front, the fingers apart. Take one coin from the left hand with the right thumb and forefinger; make a pretended throw into the air; and, under cover of that action, instantly pass the coin to the rear finger hold, then to the upper pinch between the first joints of the first and second fingers.
Under cover of a downward circular motion of the hand transfer the coin to the oblique palm with the back of the hand to the front, the fingers stretched wide apart. By reversing the movement bring the coin back to the same rear pinch as before, the fingers outstretched and joined, the palm of the hand to the front.
Bring the left hand up to the right hand, take one of the four remaining coins with the right thumb and forefinger, and at the same time, under cover of the back of the left hand, pass the last three fingers of that hand behind the right hand and pinch the first coin between the tips of the second and third fingers. Lower the left hand, leaving the second coin at the tips of the right thumb and forefinger, and transfer the first coin to the oblique palm in that hand.
Proceed in exactly the same way with the vanish of the second and third coins. The position then will be this: In the left hand you have one coin visible at the tips of the left thumb and forefinger and three coins in the oblique palm; in the right hand you show one coin at the tips of the thumb and forefinger. Hold up the left hand, showing the last coin and looking at it yourself; then transfer your gaze to the coin in the right hand and at the same time let the left hand drop, transferring its coin to the oblique palm and at once realigning the thumb and fingers as if they still held the coin. Vanish the coin from the right hand; bring the left hand over and pretend to place the last coin between the right thumb and forefinger, at the same time stealing the fourth coin and in due course transferring it to the oblique palm.
Hold the right thumb and forefinger together as if they really held a coin; keep the hand in motion and then suddenly throw the imaginary coin in the air, opening the fingers widely and showing both sides of the hand. Pause a moment, then make a catch in the air with the left hand. Jingle the coins in that hand and then drop them into the right hand, counting them to show that all five have been recovered.
