Chess MatchAuthor/Originator: Paul Brignall
Based on Thornton's "Direction of Thought," Paul Brignall's Chess Match is a mentalism effect you can perform close-up. It uses five different chess pieces and unprinted, business-size cards. Here's the effect. Five cards - each with the name of a different chess piece - are placed writing-side down on the table in front of the spectator. You now state that you will attempt to direct him to each chess piece by thought control. To demonstrate this, the spectator is asked to place any of the chess pieces next to any of the face down cards which he feels may match. You then write the name of the chosen chess piece on the back of the card indicated. The moment all five are chosen by the spectator, the cards are turned over to reveal the spectators "guesses" were 100% correct! Even though the spectator has a completely free choice of where to place each card, Chess Match works every time! What's more, there are no special props to buy. All you require are five regular chess men (or any five small objects), a supply of blank cards you can cut-to-size from any suitable card stock, and a pen. That's it. And there isn't even a difficult sleight - everything is accomplished through "management" and one easy move. This is one you're going to love doing!
