4. THE GLIDE

This is a very easy and useful sleight. The effect is that the bottom card of the pack is shown and dealt on the table; in reality the second card is taken, the bottom card remaining in position. To do this, hold the pack face down in the left hand, the thumb at the middle of one side, the other side resting against the first joints of the fingers which are curled under the pack, the tips of the second and third fingers resting on the middle of the bottom card, the little finger free. Hold the pack upright to show the bottom card to the spectators (Fig. 16); then turn the hand, bringing the pack face down; pull the bottom card inwards with the tips of the second and third fingers; with the tip of the right second finger draw the next card forwards, seize it between that finger and the thumb, draw it away, and place it face down on the table. Bend the little finger behind the bottom card and press it back level with the others (Fig. 17).
Sometimes it is necessary to draw several cards off the bottom after the glide has been made, in which ease the action of the little finger does not come into play until the last card has been drawn out.
