2. THE RIFFLE SHUFFLE

To retain a card or cards on the top with a riffle shuffle is the simplest thing in the world. You have only to see that it, or they, drop from the right-hand portion last of all.

To retain cards on the bottom, after cutting the pack and putting the two portions together for the riffle shuffle, with the left thumb lift the cards above those to be retained on the bottom and riffle the cards from the right-hand portion into these cards only, so that the bottom cards of the pack remain intact. In both cases cover the operation with the hands as much as possible (Fig. 5).

I would urge the reader to practice the foregoing sleights thoroughly before going any further. I have found by experience in teaching that anyone used to handling cards—a bridge player, for example—can learn them inside of an hour. To execute them rapidly, without looking at the hands and while talking, is merely a matter of further practice.
