2. THE REGULAR PALM

Hold the ball between the tips of the thumb and forefinger and roll it with the thumb over the tips of the second and third fingers until it arrives at the tips of the third and fourth fingers, which separate slightly to receive it (Fig. 5) and then grip it. The instant the ball is thus held, move the thumb back to its first position against the first finger and, simultaneously, close the third and fourth fingers into the palm, carrying the ball with them and pressing it into the regular palming position (Fig. 6). In this case also the ball is produced at the fingertips by making exactly the same movements of the fingers and the thumb in the reverse order.

These are the only methods of palming that are necessary; indeed, many skilled performers use the finger palm only, but there is a decided advantage in being able to vary one’s methods. The regular palm permits the fingers to be separated when it is advisable to do so in order to throw the spectators off the track.
