4. TO PICK UP AND HOLD TWO BALLS AS ONE
With a ball palmed in the thumb palm. We will call the palmed ball A; pick up a second ball, B, by placing the joined fingers over it, lifting it with the thumb underneath; close the fingers on both balls, bringing them together; then bend the thumb and press its tip against A, squeezing A onto B and at the same time opening the fingers (Fig. 5). The two balls will thus be held as one between the thumb and the second joints of the second and third fingers.

With the ball held in the finger palm. Call the ball in the palm A and the ball to be added to it B. As you reach out to pick up B with the right hand, extend the second and third fingers, carrying A with them, over B until the inner side of A touches the outer side of B; then press the thumb against the inner side of B, squeeze the two balls tightly together, turn the hand over, and show the two balls as one.
The foregoing are the only special sleights required in the manipulation of sponge balls. The ordinary sleights, already explained in connection with billiard balls (see Chapter V), can also be used when the operator becomes accustomed to the different feel of the sponge balls.
