1. PREPARED HANDKERCHIEF

To make this you have simply to sew a little pocket in one corner of a handkerchief, enclosing a ring in it (Fig. 1). If the handkerchief has a fairly wide hem, a simpler method is to open the hem, insert the ring, and sew the fabric so that the ring is secured at one corner. The best way to use this prepared handkerchief in order to get possession of a borrowed ring, leaving the original apparently in full view or even held by a spectator, is this:

image

Take the borrowed ring between the tips of the right thumb and forefinger; show the handkerchief stretched out, one corner held by the tips of the left thumb and forefinger and the opposite corner held between the right first and second fingers. Cross the hands to show the other side of the fabric; then thrust the right hand, carrying both the ring and the prepared corner, against the middle of the handkerchief at the back. With the left hand seize the prepared corner from above, through the middle of the fabric, and at the same time slide the borrowed ring into the right thumb grip. Bring the right hand from underneath, its back to the spectators, and either twist the handkerchief tightly round the duplicate ring or, better, tie a knot so that the middle of the handkerchief forms a little bag with the duplicate ring inside. In this condition it can be left with a spectator to hold without any danger of untimely revelation.

To vanish the ring apparently, untie the knot, allowing the spectator to retain hold of the duplicate ring through the fabric, seize one corner, and flick the handkerchief in the air. Open it out at once and get the prepared corner between the thumb and fingers; again show all parts of the handkerchief, turning it back and front. It should then be pocketed casually, as if it were an ordinary everyday article.
