3. THE FINGER PINCHES

The pinch of a thimble between the fingers can be made between the , first and third fingers, or between the second and little fingers. The technique is the same in both cases, so that a description of the first, which is the one most often used, will be sufficient.

For the pinch between the first and third fingers, the thimble is held with its opening flat against the upper part of the middle finger by pressing against its sides with the sides of the first and third fingers. It can be held thus at either the front (Fig. 4) or the back (Fig. 5) of the hand.

To place the thimble in this position, starting from the tip of the forefinger, begin by putting it against the side of the middle finger, hold it there with the thumb and remove the fingertip, turn it with the thumb, and grip the opening between the sides of the first and third fingers. The thimble is then at the front pinch. To place it at the rear pinch from the same position on the tip of the forefinger, press the thimble between the tips of the thumb and second finger; withdraw the first-finger; grip the sides of the thimble between the first and third fingers; bend the middle finger under the thimble and bring it in front, turning the thimble in so doing. The first and second fingers maintain their grip and the thimble is thus brought to the rear of the second finger, with its opening against the back of that finger. The thimble is then at the rear pinch.

When the thimble is on the tip of the middle finger, it suffices to grip it between the first and third fingers, then withdraw the tip of the middle finger, straighten that finger and turn the thimble in so doing—bringing its opening against the front of the finger. This is the front pinch; to bring it to the rear pinch from the same position, simply bend the middle finger and pass it to the front, turning the thimble at the same time and leaving it at the back of the finger.

At first it may be found necessary to place the thumb on the thimble to steady it, but with a little practice this can be dispensed with. The pinches are very useful and should be done at lightning speed.
