CONJURING WITH CIGARETTES
“My cigarette! The amulet
That charms afar unrest and sorrow, The magic wand that, far beyond Today, can conjure up tomorrow.”
Charles Fletcher Lummis—My Cigarette.
Apart from a few isolated tricks, the cigarette was little used in magic until recent years. It was only when some bright mind conceived the idea of building manipulations with a lighted cigarette into a complete act that the humble fag came into its own. The act is supposed to have originated in Spain; in any case, it was first presented in Paris by Franz-Klint, a Spanish magician, in 1916. The novelty was received with such favor, by both the public and the magicians, that nowadays one rarely sees a magical performance that does not include a cigarette number.
The subject divides naturally into two parts—unlighted cigarettes and lighted cigarettes.
